My name is Qurratulain Thakur but I go by Q to save you the effort of pronouncing my extremely long name. I was born in Mumbai (Bombay), India. I immigrated with my family to the US in 1990. I was interested in needle work embroidery but didn't pursue it past my younger school days back in India. Time passed and I finished college in Minnesota with a Masters in Physics. When I decided to become a stay-at-home mom, my passion for needle work returned and soon led me to quilting. I taught myself to quilt by borrowing a book from the library. In 14 years I made over a hundred quilts and used the walking foot to quilt them on my small home domestic sewing machine. About 2-3 years ago, on the urging of another quilty friend, I tried my hand at free motion quilting. It was like entering a whole other universe...although with a lot of practice, I took to FMQ like a fish to water. Soon after that I realized that I needed a long arm to really do FMQ on large bed sized quilts. I have a Bernina Q20 on a table. I prefer the sit down version because I learned FMQ on my domestic so there was no learning curve required.
Today I quilt as a hobby and passion while holding down a day time science related job. I am also mom to two high school kids and wife and business partner to my amazingly hard working husband.
